Vero Beach is thirty miles south of Palm Bay and the end of our range, and we go because the work is there: a city of 16,800 whose older neighborhoods — the streets around downtown, the McAnsh Park and Riomar districts, the river side — sit under a live oak canopy as old as Melbourne's, with a barrier island of palms, sea grape and beach houses across the bridges, and newer subdivisions west of US-1 and along SR-60 toward I-95 that look like every other new Florida subdivision, queen palms and all. Indian River County took the worst of Milton's tornado outbreak in October 2024 — seven confirmed tornadoes, 495 structures affected and $59 million in losses — and the county's trees show it still: hangers that never came down, leaners that moved, root plates that lifted and settled back.
In the old city the work is oak preservation and careful removal: the century-old live oaks deadwooded and lifted off the 1920s roofs, the laurel oaks and pines between them craned out. On the island it's palms trimmed properly, Australian pines removed, sea grape pruned within the rules that protect it, and storm cleanup after every nor'easter and hurricane. West of town it's the builder-planted trees, lethal-bronzing queens and HOA programs. Vero Beach has its own tree ordinance — stricter than Palm Bay's — and Indian River County's rules apply outside the city; we check the parcel before we quote, and we batch Vero jobs so the crane and the crew make the trip together.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Vero Beach?
Inside the city, often — Vero Beach's tree ordinance protects trees above a size threshold on most lots and requires a permit, with the usual exemptions for invasives, dead and hazardous trees, and F.S. 163.045 statewide. Outside the city limits, Indian River County's rules apply. We check and pull the permit.
Do you really come down to Vero from Palm Bay?

The tornadoes left a hanger in my oak a year ago. Is it still a problem?
Yes. A broken limb hanging in the canopy doesn't heal or fall on a schedule — it falls when the next wind moves it, usually onto whatever's under it. Hangers are the first thing we remove on any visit.
Can you prune sea grape on the island?
Yes, within the rules — Vero Beach and the county protect sea grape as native dune vegetation, and trimming for a view is regulated. We prune it for health and clearance and tell you what the rule allows.
What's the best tree to plant after removing a laurel oak?
A live oak, if you have the room; a sabal or a gumbo limbo on the island. Not another laurel oak, and not a queen palm anywhere lethal bronzing is active — which is all of Indian River County.
