A stump left in a Palm Bay yard does three things: it sends up sprouts for years (laurel oaks and Brazilian pepper especially), it feeds subterranean termites a few feet from the house, and it sits in the way of the sod, the fence line, the new driveway or the pool. Questions we get about stump grinding
How deep do you grind?
Eight to twelve inches below grade as standard, which is enough for sod and shrubs. If you're planting a tree in the same spot or pouring a slab, tell us and we'll go deeper and take more of the root plate.
Will the stump grow back?
Ground properly, no. Laurel oaks and Brazilian pepper will sprout from roots left near the surface, which is why we chase the laterals and break up the root plate on those. Pines and palms don't resprout.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
Yes, though the soil will be full of chips that take a year or two to break down and rob nitrogen as they do. Plant a few feet off the old spot if you can, or let us haul the chips and backfill with topsoil.
What about my sprinkler lines?
We probe for them before we grind and go around what we find. If a line runs right through the root plate we'll tell you and either cap it or grind carefully around it — a cut irrigation line is a quick fix, but we'd rather not make one.
Do you grind stumps you didn't cut?
