Sebastian is twenty miles south of Palm Bay on US-1, just over the Indian River County line — 27,367 people and growing, most of them in the Sebastian Highlands, the big General Development-style grid of quarter-acre lots west of the river that was built out from the '70s on, and the rest along the river, in the older streets near downtown and the inlet, and in the newer subdivisions off CR-512 toward I-95. Hurricane Jeanne made landfall just south of Sebastian Inlet in September 2004, three weeks after Frances, and the two storms took down a generation of pines and Australian pines here; Milton's tornado outbreak in October 2024 put seven tornadoes through Indian River County. What's left is what survived, and what's grown up since: the Highlands' slash pines and laurel oaks now forty and fifty years old, the live oaks along the river, queen palms with lethal bronzing, and pepper on every canal and lot line.

The work is the same as Palm Bay's with a different city and county behind it: laurel oaks and pines removed in the Highlands, live oaks pruned along the river and in the older streets, Australian pines taken down before the next landfall, pepper cleared and treated along the canals, palms trimmed and diseased ones removed, and storm cleanup. Sebastian has its own tree code and Indian River County's rules apply outside the city limits — both lighter than Melbourne's, with the usual invasive and hazard exemptions — and we check the parcel before we cut.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Sebastian?

Sebastian's code protects certain trees above a size threshold and requires a permit for some removals; invasives, dead and hazardous trees are exempt and F.S. 163.045 applies. Outside the city limits, Indian River County's rules apply. We check the parcel and pull the permit when one is needed.
