Port Malabar's first streets went in along Palm Bay Road and Turkey Creek in the 1970s, and the laurel oaks and pines planted with them are fifty now. This is where the trees fall.
The northeast quadrant is Palm Bay's original neighborhood: the General Development streets between Palm Bay Road, Port Malabar Boulevard and Robert J. Conlan, the canal lots that run down to Turkey Creek and the Indian River, the older houses toward US-1 and the Palm Bay Colony. It was built in the '70s and '80s, and the trees that came with it were the fast ones — laurel oaks for shade in five years, slash pines the builder didn't bother to remove, queen palms by the front door. Fifty years on, those laurel oaks are hollowing at the base, the root-cut pines are dying from the top, the queens are catching lethal bronzing, and every canal bank in the quadrant has grown a wall of Brazilian pepper.
So the northeast is where we do most of our removals — laurel oaks rigged down over screened pool cages and canal seawalls, dead pines craned off the houses they leaned toward, diseased palms out before they infect the street — and most of our pepper work, clearing the canal banks from the top down without stripping the roots that hold them. It's also the first part of the city to call after a storm; the older, taller canopy takes the wind first. The arborist grades every tree honestly here, because a lot of these oaks still have twenty good years and a lot don't.

My laurel oak is 50 years old and looks fine. Should I worry?
Look at the base. Laurel oaks hollow from the inside after about 50 years, and the crown stays green until the trunk is mostly gone. Conks (shelf mushrooms), a cavity, bees or ants in the base, or a lean that's changed all mean it's time. The arborist can sound the trunk and tell you in ten minutes.
Can you get a tree off my canal lot without wrecking the seawall?
Yes — we rig limbs and trunk sections onto the lawn, never onto the seawall cap, and where a tree is over the water we lower into a boat-side drop zone or crane it from the street. We've worked hundreds of Port Malabar canal lots.
Do I need a permit in northeast Palm Bay?

Who owns the pepper on the canal bank?
The bank on your side of the canal is yours to the water line in most of Port Malabar; the canal itself is the Melbourne-Tillman Water Control District's. We clear your bank and leave the district's channel alone.
